FPV Transmitters should be one of the first things you buy when building your drone or quadcopter. An FPV Transmitter allows pilots to control unmanned aircrafts wirelessly by transmitting a video signal from your drone back to you down on ground level in real time. A high-quality video transmitter will offer exceptional performance, superior ergonomics and precise responsiveness, all aiming to enhance your flight experience.
If you’re a beginner in the drone industry and find building your own drone or quadcopter confusing, there are a number of factors you should take into consideration when choosing your transmitter.
Things to look out for:
Frequency: The frequency your FPV transmitter is one of the most important things to consider. 2.4GHz a newer technology and 5.8GHz are the most popular and common frequencies on the drone scene. 5.8GHz frequency is a popular choice because the antennas are smaller making the drone more portable and agile.
Channels: FPV Transmitters also allow you to choose between an array of different transmit channels within a specific frequency band. Essentially, this enables you to ‘fine tune’ your step up to gain the best image transmission.
Modes: There are four different types of modes: mode 1, mode 2, mode 2 and mode 4. Modes refer to the different configuration of the two control sticks. For example mode 1: the elevator control is one the left joystick and the throttle is on the right joystick. On mode 2 the configurations are the other way round, which tends to be the most common configuration because the joysticks represent the movement of your quadcopter.
Power: In the UK there is regulation in place to restrict the level of power used by drone flyers to 25mW.
Which Transmitter Should I Choose?
There are a number of transmitter brands on the market with a few firm favourites including JR Radio Transmitters, immersionRC, Foxeer and TBS. JR Radio Transmitters are renowned for their precision and responsiveness, intuitive programming and excellent ergonomics which offer an exceptional flight performance. Widely regarded as the world’s leading innovators in radio transmitters with features such as quad-bearing stick assemblies, rolling selector data input, custom naming capability for flight modes and accessible shoulder-mounted momentary contact switches.
